Share
For the first time, a bilingual edition of the Canadian Stone Carving Festival will be held in Old Montreal on July 21-23, 2023. This is a unique opportunity to meet more than 40 sculptors and stonemasons at work. Les Ateliers de la pierre du Québec is a proud partner in organizing this special edition, which will have the theme:
Where Two Rivers Meet – Exploring Our Roots, Our Culture, and What Lies Beneath the Surface.
This event is an opportunity to celebrate together the rich history and heritage that inspires us to shape the world of tomorrow.

About the Festival
The first edition of the Canadian Stone Carving Festival was launched in 2010 in Winchester, Ontario. The intention was to bring together stone carvers and stonemasons from the Ottawa area to enjoy a weekend of creative expression and camaraderie.
The festival was inspired by the European Stone Carving Festival, but it has become a unique event. By demonstrating this art in a public setting, it quickly became clear that people weren't really aware that stone carving still existed as a craft in Canada!
Public awareness and preservation of the art then became important aspects of the event.
This three-day festival is a unique opportunity to interact with professional carvers, artisans, and enthusiasts who transform blocks of limestone into unique works of art using traditional methods. See the tools. Ask questions about the techniques. Experience the art and crafts that went into the construction of the heritage buildings around you.
The 2023 Edition
On July 21, 22, and 23, 2023, stone carvers from Canada and beyond will gather in Old Montreal's Place d'Armes to showcase their skills and creativity. Using only hand tools, participants will have 18 hours over three days to complete their works.
The public is invited to enjoy the sights and sounds of this traditional workshop and to interact with the carvers. After the carving, on the afternoon of Sunday, July 23 at 2:00 p.m., all pieces will be auctioned to the public, with the proceeds going to a local charity.
The Canadian Stonecarving Festival is not a competition and is open to carvers of all experience levels, from beginners to professionals. This event was created to promote fellowship among carvers, raise public awareness of the craft, and raise funds for charity.

Shared Heritage: The Art of Stone
As part of the Festival, the Ateliers de la pierre du Québec will offer a program of demonstrations and public workshops where visitors can try their hand at stonemasonry with a professional, and also attend tool forging demonstrations, a special collaboration with the organization Les Forges de Montréal.
This activity is made possible thanks to the support of the City of Montreal as part of the cultural development agreement with the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications.
